Class 6 ~ Last peek in Penelope's Journal + Thanks !

A few last pages to show you as we finish off this series of classes.

Since this last class was all about play, I got a little playful on my final pages. Did I mention that *every* magazine image in my journal this session has come from ONE magazine? Yep, everything comes from the September 2004 issue of Oprah Magazine, with the exception of a few pieces of scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper and washi tape. I hadn't intended to use only one magazine when I started but as the weeks went on I took it on as a kind of challenge to see how far I could make one magazine stretch and how creative I could be with it.

This page below (luckily) had just the right text about connecting, less computer games, more exuberance and less grown-up-ness (which fit right into our theme). The photo was a little dark, and I knew I wanted to brighten it up, and as you all know by now from me saying it in class, the best way to get vibrancy is to use colours from the opposite side of the colour wheel, so the opposite of that dark blue was bright orange. On the page following this one in the magazine was an ad for fizzy drinks in bright yellows and oranges, and I thought they'd make great balloons for the little boy in the photo. Then I added radiating lines out from them using Posca Paint Pens ~ which are wonderful for writing over almost anything.

So ... when I punched out the circles from the fizzy drink bottles, I loved the kind of cloud-like edge the punch left on the page, so I found some more blue pages and used the punch to create even more cloud-like bottom edges ~ and yes, still in the blue/orange combo since it adds "pop" if you'll pardon the pun. And, of course, a little washi tape helps tie all the colours together, too.

I wanted to show you as well how easy it is to add colour to your black and white handouts with felt pens and my perennial favourite: water soluble crayons and waterbrushes. Seriously, if you haven't tried these in class yet, you really need to. Well, not this session (since we're done), but in January, right? Here's my page of recommended books improved with painted book covers. washi tape (and a teensy bit of collage):

I hate leftovers. Well, mostly. I had a few little things that didn't have a place yet in my journal from this week's class. My solution was to find a drop-dead gorgeous ad from the getting-thinner-every-minute Oprah magazine and then glue in the last few black and white bits and tie them together with colour:

The text on the above page was written by my brother, who I stay in touch with over social media and who posts lots of wise and wonderful stuff. This one reads: My Lords & Ladies! I bring forth this Important Announcement of Service to the Public: WEAR YOUR ARMOUR! Whether it be: * make-up * a band t-shirt * fandom pins * tattoos * jewelry * your favourite pair of ripped jeans * or something else no one else can touch or see, like your favourite song repeating like a mantra in your head, the sound of your heartbeat, or the knowledge that you were brave enough to get out of bed today when everything else inside you said "No". Wear your armour and kick ass.

I have one more page to share to sum up everything this session:

Thanks so much to everyone who's come out to the classes and made them so much fun and so heartful. There's be a new series starting in January, and (as usual), they'll be more of the same only different. We're moving up to a bigger page size (several of you have mentioned you'd like this), and we'll be approaching things from a new direction, so I hope to see you there!

And (in the meantime) ... I've mentioned this several times as well, but if my classes aren't quite long enough to get into creating something, I also organize a monthly 4-hour art meetup on the third Sunday each month at MOSAIC, which is located at 5575 Boundary Road (at Kingsway). From noon to 3 pm, we each work on whatever portable art project we've brought along ~ sharing materials, ideas and connecting with like-minded people. At 3 pm, we pack up our art and trade Artist Trading Cards, which as small pieces of art measuring 2.5" x 3.5". Don't worry if you don't know about anything about Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), our group is fun and generous and would be more than happy to share our cards with you the first time to get you started.

It's a very casual get together, and although no RSVP is needed, if you want to let me know you're coming ahead of time, I can be watching out for you ... I think you'd all fit in perfectly. :)

And, finally, thanks so much for your wonderful card and gift! I was very touched by your lovely words. I know how important creative self-expression has become in my life, and it is my pleasure and joy to share it with you and see you sharing with each other. Best. Thing Ever.

Hope to see you again in January ...
