April - Creating your own quote collection

There are lots of ways of collecting quotes. I have several ways I do it, but basically, it boils down to physical vs. digital. There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways:

Physical:
  • Can be handwritten or typed out and printed from computer
  • Can be cut from articles in magazines
  • Can be artfully added to your journal pages
  • Easily added to a journal or notebook you carry with you every day (you are carrying one, aren't you?)
  • Can be easily reread every time you look at your journal ~ no tech needed
Digital:
  • You can create a document on your computer (or phone, or tablet) and add to it as you go through your day, either by typing or by taking a photo
  • Your document can be arranged by topic or author and is keyword searchable
  • Easy to copy and paste new quotes in whatever your preferred order is
  • Print them out over and over for your journal, or to give to friends.
  • Lots of online sources. My two favourites are Brainy Quote and The Quote Garden
Here are some of my favourite quotes to get you started working in your journal:
  • Reality is made up of circles, but we see straight lines. ~ Peter Senge
  • The patterns of our lives reveal us. Our habits measure us. ~ Mary Oliver
  • A mistake repeated more than once is a decision. ~ Paulo Coelho
  • A saint is just a sinner who keeps on trying. ~ Nelson Mandela
  • A man doesn't have to be an angel in order to be a saint. ~ Albert Schweitzer
  • Harmony makes small things grow. Lack of it makes great things decay. ~ Sallust
  • Think like a man of action. Act like a man of thought.  ~ Henri-Louis Bergson
  • The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story and writes another. ~ J.M. Barrie
  • People who start projects and never finish them are cooler than people who never start. ~ Unknown
  • The key to keeping your balance is knowing when you’ve lost it. ~ Anonymous
  • I’m restless.  Things are calling me away. My hair is being pulled by the stars again. ~ Anais Nin
  • You can’t go on indefinitely being just an ordinary egg. We must be hatched or go bad. ~ C.S. Lewis
  • Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth. ~ Ludwig Börne
  • Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. ~ Karim Seddiki
  • What we see depends on what we look for. ~ Sir John Lubbock
  • The best project you will ever work on is you. ~ Anonymous
  • They tried to bury us, but they didn't realize we were seeds. ~ Mexican Proverb
  • If you are irritated by every rub, how can you become polished?. ~ Rumi
  • I go to seek a Great Perhaps … ~ François Rabelais

To show you how I turn a quote into something in my journal, I chose one of the quotes above and did this with it:

The outside border is made with washi tape, but I could have used parts of a real map if I wanted to. The clouds are rubber stamps, and the leaves were cut from painted music paper and then I added lines with sharpie to bring the leaves into sharper relief since they're in the foreground and I added the line of hill ti give the whole thing more depth.
