I thought I'd end off this series on quotes with some pages from my journal so you can all see how I use the quotes and notes from the handouts using some of the materials we talked about. I'll detail under each photo what I used and how I did it, although most of it is pretty simple. Here we go!
 |
| The backgrounds are ads from magazines and I'm using the quotes to cover up the text in the ads. For example, the page on the left is clearly about lipstick, but I fell in love with all the texture and light and shadow. I wanted to show you these two pages together so you can see how I balance light and dark across a 2-page spread. Firstly, I try to keep to a limited colour range, in this case: red, pink, beige, gray/pale blue and black. I also think about how to move colour from one side of the spread to the other ~ deliberately using a bit of the yellow/beige on both pages to tie them together, and the added blue on the letters in the "deep breath" quote are to connect with the blue and gray circle in the upper lefthand rosette around the letter O. |

| This page started with photos from articles in a meditation magazine. I chose green and orange for two reasons: firstly they are almost directly across from each other on the colour wheel, so putting them next to each other makes them look more vibrant, and secondly because I liked the natural textures (leaves, fabric). I tied the two images together using washi tape that had both colours in it. The mehndi hands are from the our colouring sessions, and I also coloured them mostly in green and orange to unite them with the background as well. I chose blue as a border for the booklet the hands are holding to make it stand out from everything else, and also make it "come forward" towards the viewer. |

| This is a very simple page ... the background again is an ad from the meditation magazine with a few quotes from our handouts thrown in. I wanted to point out that you can add colour to the black and white quotes to make them tie into the colours you're using on the page. |
 |
| Obviously still working through my green/orange frame of mind ... I often find that I am drawn to certain colour combinations on certain days, and will slowly move into other colour palettes as time passes. These moods may be tied to the weather, or how I'm feeling, or just inspired by the images I'm attracted to in my sources materials on that day. Don't worry if you're "stuck" in one colour palette for awhile ... you'll move on ... |

| Another page from the meditation magazine! Great to work with. I really loved the softness of the blue and yellow highlights in the original painting, so I used blue and yellow felt pens to add colour to my teapot in the quote to tie them together. I also like the sort of splodgy, circular theme ... the teapot, the circle quote (sharpie on gesso!), the treetops, and then finally the washi tape along the top edge of the page. I love how the blue dots in the washi tape and so similar to the blue dots on the background. So little of this page is "original", but something about combining things this way make me love looking at it. |

| I wanted to include this page to show you that quite random things can "talk to each other" when assembled together. Again, I've chosen two colours almost across from each other on the colour wheel: orange and blue, to give interesting contrast. I've chosen a mix of patterns, but the waves, dots and text on the washi tape all seem to go together pretty well. At first the little green "encourage mint" at the top seems out of place, but there's a tiny bit of green in the image under the quote. And I *love* the somewhat nonsensical "before" and "after" faces. Are they really that different? I don't think so, but for me it relates to the duality of the other things on the page: Curb your appetite (without dieting), and the story we mean to write (while writing another). These are the kind little subtleties of connection that can make page interesting. I think it's human nature to look for relationships between things in close proximity. There must be some message here, our brain says ... |

This page only needed minimal addtions. Most of the page is an ad from a magazine (who knows what for? I covered the product with text!), I mirrored the balloons by putting washi tape with circles at the bottom of the page. I echoed the green balloons with green washi tape along one edge. I mirrored her yellow blouse with yellow qashi tape on the other edge. The quote in the glass was from our class handouts, and I coloured it blue so it would look "empty" against the blue sky. And you might recognize the landscape she's floating over from the page above - the bit with the J.M.Barrie quote on it. Sneaky ...
My next post will be a quick one about making your own journal, including handouts from the class. If you missed it and still want to learn how to make your journal - never fear - our next series of classes will begin again this Wednesday, April 12th, and this time we'll begin with making journals - and proceed from there in future weeks. Hopefully, see you there!
