Katherine Dunn is one of those people whose book jumped off the shelf at me because it was so different from anything I've ever tried to do. She is brave with colour, deep in mystery and mixes traditional materials with modern technology in ways that are completely not obvious in her finished work. I'm still trying to get to wherever she is, and I'll be trying for years to come.
Walt Whitman has been a favourite of mine for a much longer time. I never read him in school ~ we were all focused on Canadian poets by the time I got to high school ~ but when I found his poems, I loved their sheer audacity. Considering the time he was writing them, they were downright scandalous ~ chucking aside the rules of poetry right, left and center, which is pretty much what he did in his day to day life as well. I'm not sure we would have been friends had I known him then (I'm far too conventional), but I do love his words on a page.
