Week 2: Communities I belong to ... a peek at Penelope's journal

It's interesting to think of all the communities we belong to that we sometimes forget. As I said on the handout, all of us belong to very large communities: "Mammals alive on Earth at this time", and all of us belong to very small communities: "People who were born to my parents on the same day as me."

A good, deep think would doubtless yield more communities than the few I listed here, so you could do this exericse on a ongoing basis and keep adding as they come to you.

Here's my page:

Supplies-wise, I thought you might find this interesting: the backgrounds are created using the sheets I used when I tested all the pencil crayons for the class as I sharpened them. I had no plan as I scribbled a little of each colour on the paper, but in the usual way, once I created it, I liked the effect and kept in my journal for future use. I decided to do some circles overlapping on top of the pencil scribbles as a nod to Venn diagrams, which are often used to show how certain groups of things overlap. If I set out to create something "random" like this, I would fail, but to "just happen" to create it while doing something else? Easy.

I wanted to say that my journal is always available in class if you want to see the real pages, and I'm always happy to answer questions on either content or process where creating journal pages is concerned.

  1. You are so thoughtful. These exercises are perfect for beginning and more experienced journalists alike. This class is such an excellent combination of these discovery exercises and the "artsy" stuff. Pat yourself on the back - RIGHT NOW!!
